“A society grows great when old men and women craft gaming maps whose glades they know they shall never roll dice in.” -Geek Proverb
I can be financially impulsive. Historically. Sometimes.
But I have never made a faster or more definitive purchase than I did after trying about 4.7 seconds of the Canvas of Kings demo on Steam.
As stated on the Steam page, Canvas of Kings is "is a minimalistic mapmaking tool that focuses on randomness and auto-generated elements on user-definable and interactive paths, plots and rooms." That, and check this out:

That is a well I dragged and dropped right there. And that there is a bird flying over the well. I didn't add the bird. There's just birds flying over your map as you build. And when you add foresty trees the trees sway in the (a?) wind. And items in the map you add cast shadows based on light sources you can adjust.
What is this? Where has this been? Has my whole life just been an opportunity to prepare myself to be the type of human being who can so deeply appreciate what this Canvas of Kings is all about—its vibes and, just, all of it?
I started with a well because I Googled "village design how to" in a panic and it told me, "To design a village, start by creating a central "commons" area and defining distinct districts for housing, production, and farming." That and, "1. Establish a central hub. Create a central common area: Design a central gathering space that acts as the heart of the village."
So I did that. I'm doing that.

More birds are flying over my hub.
Trees are swaying.
This is amazing.
More, soon.
